Cultural Traits

  • Isolationist: Ombuian tends to distrust outsiders and prefer to keep them at arm's length - except in cities where they are supposed to be. Foreigners are an object that can be quite wonderful to see - but one must take care to not overstay their welcome.
  • Traditionalist: Ombuain are rather traditional and defensive about their culture and what they see as their paradise, and tend to be slower in adopting new ideas from the outside, if not outright reactionary.
  • Reject Deviant: Going against the social conventions or adopting the way of living of Non-Ombuian elves can be tantamount to social suicide in the conservative Ombu society - who has yet to feel any necessity or need to disrupt their transquilant day of life.
  • Nature Know Best: If an invention can be justified as nature-like, organic even, it is often welcomed and accepted, yet if something does not have a clearly nature-like bend, it can be harder to have it gain acceptance inside Ombuain society - unless it is of obvious practical benefits (like metalworking)
  • Widespread Craftsmanship: The nature of Ombu agriculture had led to a large amount of free time for most of the Ombuian - some of which are spent herding animals and taking great care of them, other on different kind of craftsmanship, making a lot of Ombuian skilled in some kind of amateur arts - or sometime even magic.
  • Leisurely: The average Ombuian enjoys a more leisurely life with more free time to themselves and less need for frequent or peak labor - as a result, Ombuian tend to take many mini holidays and festivals to break up the monotony of life.
  • Arboriculture: Ombu has built an extremely specialized form of arboriculture - relying on roughly four types of trees which are cultivated widely in their territory. The four types of trees occur naturally in the Ombuian forest - which is known for their unique floras that seem to be tailor made for human sustenance. The Seargrir Tree is used to cultivate a breadfruit like, calories dense fruit that bear fruit all year round in their climate, while Bagrir tree provides a very seedy fruit that provides the main source of protein. The Sciugcli is a long lived tree that is like willow, and often pollarded to provide much needed firewood. The Peibhcli is a large oak like tree, which produces wood rapidly and yields acorns and nuts that can be eaten by various animals and used as a treat. It is also farmed for wood and used for construction.
  • Prohibition Clearing: Forest land is cleared, but with useful trees planted in its stead - Ombuian consider clearing of land for more than the necessity of planting orchards and constructing houses abhorrent - exemptions are made for the major urban center of Ombu.
  • Centralized Construction: Treehouses are used widely alongside underground building, but practicality issue (and population pressure to not waste too much space on residence) means that aboveground villages are common - however, most of them are often built up to three or four storeys high, surrounded by a main road and the village’s orchards and forest.,

Cuisine

Ombuian cuisine is quite simple in their staple - with the Seargrir used to make porridge or baked in an oven to produce a sweet food. Sometimes it would be stuffed with treats, and other times it would be dried and used to bake and make bread. Bagrir seeds are boiled and often pan-fried to make a crunchy, delicious source of protein, often garnished with salt, garlic and onion. Ombuian cuisine also makes great use of nuts and almonds, alongside other spices that can be grown in a subtropical area.

Meat wise, Ombuain make great uses of seafood where they can be found or grown - but aquaculture is not common. Pigs and chicken are the most common type of meat, with every other type of meat mostly being imported. Ombuian take great care to fatten their pigs and are known for the extremely delicious ham and bacon made from their pigs, which are a common export Ombuian trade for other produce.

Seargrir beer is the most common alcoholic drink, and natively grown tea are also widely consumed and very affordable - to the extent it has displaced beer as the most common everyday drink.\

Ombuian cuisine are somewhat unique and not based on any existing real life cuisine.

Warfare & Tactics

Ombuian commonly utilize longbows made from wood of the Sciugcli tree, and are often armored in gambeson - heavy metal armor having not developed. Nobles utilize metallic armor, usually simple cuirass or maille, with the rare, occasional imported full plate armor set. While Ombu is not devoid of metal and the metal deposits are worked extensively, there simply isn’t enough for extensive metalworking. Soldiers tend to be equipped with shields, axes and hammer - swords being a symbol of status in Ombu.

Ombuian does not field cavalry of any sort, and tends to compensate by fielding an abnormally large amount of mages (Relative to other elven civilizations).
